After six years of anticipation, the time has come for us to meet again in the 2nd ICBP conference. In conjunction with the main theme, "Ensuring a sustainable tomorrow", the focus of this conference is on the need to develop green processes and green products. The scope of this conference covers research on bio-based polymers (nucleic acids, polyamides, polysaccharides, polyesters, polyisoprenoids, and polyphenols) including various synthetic polymers derived from renewable resources and CO2.

The 1st ICBP conference was organized by Y. Doi in November 2003 and was held at RIKEN, Japan. Over 200 academic and industrial participants came together from 20 different countries and contributed 47 lectures and 91 posters on various disciplines of bio-based polymers. The sessions covered latest developments on biosynthesis of various bio-based and biodegradable polymers including the commercialization of these products.

The up-coming conference will be organized by K. Sudesh from Universiti Sains Malaysia in a joint-collaboration with T. Iwata from Tokyo University and H. Abe from RIKEN, Japan.

The 2nd ICBP 2009 will be held in Penang Island, which locates historical streets that were recently recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Penang Island is endowed with multicultural heritage, exotic food, picturesque landscapes, sandy beaches and warm hospitality.

We hope that the 2nd ICBP 2009 will serve as an effective platform for institutions and industries to share ideas and current research developments in bio-based polymers.

Warm Regards
